Conte’s Physical Requirements at Tottenham

Beyond the technical and tactical skill of any player Conte might look at bringing in, the physical aspect must be considered in the Premier League especially. The physicality aspect is where Bryan Gil struggled during his first half-season at Tottenham and, unfortunately, is something coaching can only do so much to change.

Given coaching cannot make a player bigger or faster, ensuring that you sign the correct type of physical players initially makes the most sense. Conte noted players that are strong physically, fast, and have a good engine.

The engine, in particular, is essential in an Antonio Conte system where each player has their responsibility and must work to perform that role.

As we see Bentancur closing out with the same enthusiasm in the 80th minute that he did in the eighth and see Kulusevski running to shut down the fullback and pressure from the from, we know that Conte’s fingerprints were all over those two signings.

With Conte’s additional experience in the Premier League and his relationship with Director of Football Fabio Paratici, we expect these criteria to be critical to the coming summer search for more depth and talent. If that happens, fans again have reason to hope that regardless of the player’s name being signed this summer, their suitability to the task is appropriate.
