Projected Spurs Defence

While some may be hoping for a back four, it is unlikely to happen with Conte in charge, as the Italian prefers a back three. But after three goals in two games, something has to change.

Left-back – Davinson Sanchez

Most fans probably feel an exciting hesitance with Sanchez on the pitch. Factor in being out of his more natural, right-back position, and few will be ecstatic. However, Tottenham has struggled even after Dier’s return to keep out goals, and Ben Davies is the most likely of the group to be replaced. Sanchez, like everyone else, performed better under Conte initially but has seemingly regressed to the mean over his last few outings. Still, if Spurs change in the back, this is it.

Centre-back – Eric Dier

Tottenham’s organization has been better defensively since Eric Dier has returned to the pitch. That said, conceding three goals in two games is not great, although Dier has not been at fault. His leadership will be vital against a Leeds side that should be as hungry for a win as Tottenham is.

Right-back – Cristian Romero

Although we have Davies going to the bench, Cristian Romero has conceded some of the big moments defensively for Spurs. VAR flagged Romero for the late handball in the box, and it was Romero who that Ben Mee beat at the back post for Burnley’s winner. Despite those moments, Romero has been excellent at defending with natural vigour and aggression. As his game refines, so too will Spurs’ defence.

Goalkeeper – Hugo Lloris

Hugo Lloris could have been more commanding in his box against the Clarets, although coming out and making aerial claims has never been one of Lloris’ strengths. As the club captain and having just signed a new contract extension, it seems unlikely Pierluigi Gollini gets the nod, particularly after the many saves Hugo had against Manchester City in Spurs win. A big game from Hugo and a clean sheet is something the entire team could use.
