Defence

Hugo Lloris 7/10

Made a strong save on a close-range header in the second half, but was, for the most part, untested. Had no chance on Burnley’s lone goal.

Cristian Romero 5/10

On the cusp of completing an impressive error-free defensive performance, Cristian Romero wasn’t able to prevent Ben Mee from getting the better of him in the air at the back post. It cost his side dearly, as Burnley had only one other excellent chance on goal. Unfortunately, that’s where his 5/10 comes from. Can’t afford to get beaten like that in tight matches.

Otherwise he was full blooded and defended very well. You have to love Romero’s physicality and commitment. He’s a throwback defender who isn’t afraid to punish anyone who dares take him on. Romero over committed once on an aerial ball, but was otherwise stout and unerring. He also, like Ben Davies, on the left loves to push forward. Just needs to be better on set pieces and cannot afford to let his opposing number get the better of him.

Eric Dier 7.5/10

Another calm and composed performance, Tottenham never really looked like conceding, other than from two set pieces, with Eric Dier marshalling the rearguard. He wasn’t forced into many difficult situations or challenges, but organized and was strong throughout. Made a wonderful sliding challenge on Dwight McNeil in the 62nd minute, cutting out an assured chance. Also looks confident in possession and is spraying the ball around with eye-of-the-needle precision.

Ben Davies 7/10

Ben Davies is a man revitalized since Dier’s return to the team. He performed well this evening. Didn’t commit any errors and was sure footed. Nothing spectacular but proficiently did his job.
