It is difficult to call an early February game against a mid-table team a must-win. However, Tottenham Hotspur must beat Southampton Wednesday for several reasons; here are three.

When Tottenham Hotspur host Southampton on Wednesday, it will be a game Spurs will be looking for a bit of revenge, which is just one of the reasons Spurs must beat the Saints. Beyond a bit of revenge, the table demands Spurs take all three points.

Reason 1: Tottenham needs to keep pace

After West Ham won and Manchester United drew on Tuesday, Spurs fell a bit further behind in the race for the top four. Although one win would have Tottenham just a point back of the Hammers with several games in hand, a loss leaves Spurs in a vastly inferior place.

A loss guarantees Tottenham will go into the weekend no better than seventh and behind Arsenal in the table. While those games in hand are lovely, the one Spurs have on Arsenal will be temporarily gone after tomorrow, and the team cannot count on those points. However, a victory on Wednesday would be three points they need to keep up with all other contenders.
