Lost in the commotion at the end of the transfer window was the news that Tottenham got stars Heung-min Son and Cristian Romero back on the practice field from injury.

Not a particularly deep team; some injuries will impact Tottenham Hotspur more than others. Although injured for a shorter period, there is little doubt that Son’s injury had a more significant impact on the team, although the return of Romero might be just as substantial this weekend in the FA Cup.

Tottenham have coped with Romero out

At first, the loss of Cristian Romero – who was injured on international duty with Argentina – seemed devastating. The Argentine was settling into both Tottenham and to a new coach, and Spurs options behind Romero seemed questionable at best.

Fast forward nearly three months since Romero went down, and Tottenham has fared relatively well without their top summer signing. Davinson Sanchez recaptured his form under  Antonio Conte, and things seemed to settle defensively. Of course, when Eric Dier got hurt, the loss of Romero started to sting.

The good news is that Dier was already back, and Romero is now back too, which is particularly important given Sanchez is just arriving back from international duty with Colombia. After no international games and a couple of weeks of training with the team, a cup match seems like the perfect return for Romero.

Spurs have missed Sonny

Just as the pain of missing Romero was compounded when Dier went out, the same was valid with Son’s absence from the off. Tottenham was already short of attackers, with Steven Bergwijn in and out of availability.

Fortunately, Tottenham got a reprieve on the Arsenal match with a weakened front line but had no such luck, and Chelsea knocked Spurs out of the Carabao Cup without Son. It looked like Spurs would be further suffering without their South Korean sensation, but Steven Berwgijn bailed the team out against Leicester City, and things were again right in north London.

Whereas Sanchez’s international duty opens the door for Romero, there was never any doubt about Son returning to the line-up, and we should expect to see him against Brighton on Saturday, hopefully working his way back to his best.

Next. Two or three in the middle for Tottenham?. dark

Ultimately the return of both Son and Romero reflects a team returning to health and getting ready for a critical three-month run starting with Brighton on Saturday.
