It’s looking more likely that Bryan Gil will be packing his bags for sunny Spain, as Valencia “are confident” Tottenham will agree to terms before Monday’s 11 pm transfer deadline.

Finally Tottenham’s transfer strategy is coming to fruition, albeit entirely too late. The plan was to offload Gil, Dele Alli, Giovani Lo Celso and Tanguy Ndombele to make room for at least three new arrivals.

Fabio Paratici, in theory, had a sound transfer strategy. However, in order for it to be effective in reality, Spurs needed to confirm the outgoing loan deals at least a week ago, which would have provided enough time to bring in accomplished reinforcements.

But here we are, a mere three days away from the deadline, and Tottenham are just now making good on the first part of their strategy. It looks like Giovani Lo Celso is on his way to Lyon and Gil, if Tottenham agree to release the young Spaniard without having a concrete replacement confirmed, is off to Valencia on loan.

In an ulterior world that is more closely linked to fantasy, Tottenham would have already confirmed, at least behind closed doors, the arrival of Dejan Kulusevski before sending Gil on loan.

And maybe that’s precisely what Fabio Paratici is waiting for before allowing Gil to join Valencia.

This deal makes sense for Tottenham if that’s the case. Gil isn’t getting nearly enough first-team action at Spurs and a loan stint at Valencia would benefit greatly the talented 20-year-old, on one condition.

Tottenham cannot allow Valencia an option to buy

Tottenham must be uncompromising with one component of negotiations: they must not allow Valencia, under any circumstances, an option to buy.

It’s a concession Spurs cannot afford. Gil has boundless potential and has the ability, with time and experience, to have an instrumental impact on first team proceedings somewhere down the line. While his illustrious future years at Tottenham are by no means a certainty, Paratici and company will want to safeguard and secure one of their most talented and promising assets.

Sending him to Spain to obtain consistent match time and hone his craft more intricately, if his return to Hotspur Way is guaranteed, makes sense. It looks like Valencia will be responsible for paying all of Gil’s wages until at least June, which would be a solid result for Spurs.

To this point there has been no to-buy clause mentioned as part of the negotiations. As long as Spurs keep it that way and bring in at least one reinforcement (the likelihood of which decreases with each passing hour), sending Gil on loan is a logical, even sound, club decision.
