Fabio Paratici was hired to rebuild Tottenham Hotspur and to this end, regardless of what happens in this January transfer window, Paratici made Spurs’ biggest signing before it opened.

Tottenham Hotspur has an imbalanced squad that is long overdue for a makeover. Part of that makeover is shipping players out and part is of course bringing players in. And while it may be easy to grow hysterical over the lack of progress in the January transfer market, we fans would do well to remember Paratici’s biggest signing this season – unless Leo Messi walks through the door – was the hiring of coach Antonio Conte in November.

Do we remember the disarray at Tottenham?

It was not all Nuno Espirito Santo’s fault but after the success of Mauricio Pochettino and the disaster that became of the Jose Mourinho era, Santo was not in a great position to succeed. If we remember most of the summer – besides looking for a coach – was spent wondering what would happen to Harry Kane.

So impacted was Kane by the transfer talk – or maybe the minutes at Euro 2020 – that Spurs talisman is just now returning to form. While Nuno was praying for underachievers to change their stripes, with Conte now in charge, there is finally a real sense of direction.

Tottenham again have direction

No, the squad is not built for Conte’s system and clearly needs some upgrades and improvements in several areas. However, there are very few fans who do not believe Antonio Conte is not the man for the job.

In fact, so sure are most folks about Conte’s quality the prevailing rumour surrounding the Italian is that he will simply leave if he is not backed – presumably in the transfer market.

It is important that we all remember that Conte leaves for all kinds of reasons but he surely wants to have an offseason, a summer transfer window, and a preseason to build a team before he simply calls it quits.

When all is said in done come February 1, we may not get all the players we want or get rid of them either but we do have the coach of our dreams and that is something worth holding on to.
