Latest update on Tottenham negotiations with FC Porto over Luis Diaz

Tottenham have made a £38 million bid plus about £7 million in add ons for Luis Diaz, which has reportedly been rejected by FC Porto. 

Fabrizio Romano tweeted about Tottenham’s first bid recently, saying Spurs have made an official bid to try and secure Diaz’s signature.

But various sources are saying that offer will not be enough to convince Porto to sell Diaz. Tottenham, according to journalist Gianluigi Longari, will need to significantly up the ante and increase their bid to about £65 million to get this deal over the line.

Journalist Gonçalo Lopes is also reporting that Porto have in fact rejected the bid. Some are saying Porto will require the 80 million Euros (£67 million) to confirm the transfer, while others believe 60 million Euros (£50 million) will be enough.

So what do we actually know?

Not a whole lot. We know Spurs are interested in Diaz and the likelihood points to a lowball offer being submitted. Porto has probably rejected it, though that is still unconfirmed. Diaz is in Colombia, making the prospective deal even more complicated.

And Porto purportedly want an amount close to £67 million to activate the release clause in Diaz’s contract. If that’s the case, there’s almost no chance of Spurs meeting Porto’s demands.

So, a lot of ifs, ands, buts and don’t knows. Which is the case with any big-money Tottenham transfer negotiation, the few there have been.

We’ll have to wait and see if this progresses, but as of now, no deal is imminent. The question is whether Spurs are prepared to pay up to £70 million for the 25-year-old. I would say £50 million is probable, £70 million is unlikely.
