Tottenham and Arsenal both looking for third straight win Sunday
By Aaron Coe
In an odd twist in a long rivalry, assuming one team wins on Sunday in the north London derby, whether Tottenham or Arsenal, that team can claim three in a row.
Regardless of what either fan base may have you believe, head-to-head, Tottenham and Arsenal have been pretty even the last few years. In their last 10 meetings in all competitions, both teams have four wins, four losses, and two draws.
Taken a step further, the goal difference across those 10 matches is just 1 goal, with Arsenal scoring 15 to 14 for Spurs.
Tottenham 2-0 against Arsenal at the new stadium
A lot of the success for both teams comes down to home cooking. Spurs are the last team to get a road win and that was back in December 2018 in a 0-2 win at the Emirates. Unbeaten in their last seven at home (5 wins, 2 draws) that includes a 2-0 record at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. This despite never having fans to cheer on the starting XI against Arsenal in the new digs.
It is this home winning streak against Arsenal which Tottenham is looking to take to three in a row Sunday. However, despite this success at home, the Gunners have won two straight in the series and likely will be playing with a chip on their shoulders.
Arsenal, looking for third in a row over Tottenham
If the match is played on Sunday we have to assume it will be under some kind of protest from Arsenal, whether formal or not. Given the Gunners have already asked to postpone the fixture we know they’d prefer not to play and likely would be playing with a bit of edge if they do have to fulfill their scheduled obligation.
Before the injuries and players’ absences and a straight cross from Manchester City, Arsenal had won four in a row in the Premier League. Those four wins included three shutouts and 14 goals to just one against. Further, although winless at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Arsenal has won two in a row against Spurs.
We all can remember the Gunners 3-1 win making it three straight losses for Spurs under Nuno Espirito Santo after starting with three straight wins. Prior to that game back in March of 2021, Arsenal came back from a goal down to beat Spurs 2-1 on an Alexandre Lacazette penalty. That March 2021 game was headlined for Spurs by Erik Lamela, who both scored his rabona and got double booked and sent off.
Now assuming they play Sunday, someone is going to both extend and break a streak. Hopefully, for Spurs, it is about remaining unbeaten at the new stadium against the Gunners, and with fans there supporting our lily whites for the first time against Arsenal, expect that win.
