Kane captain, as Gollini gets rare Tottenham start vs Chelsea
By Aaron Coe
Tottenham Hotspur has dropped their starting XI for the second-leg against Chelsea and Pierluigi Gollini gets a rare start in goal as Harry Kane captains Spurs.
We knew coming in some players were going to be out of action for Tottenham in the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final against Chelsea. However, most would not have predicted that Hugo Lloris be sitting with Spurs facing a two-goal deficit but that is the case with Gollini getting the start.
Several changes in the Tottenham team facing Chelsea
Besides the goalkeeping change, Harry Winks has jumped back into the starting lineup next to Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, with Oliver Skipp going to the bench. Additionally, with Heung-min Son out due to injury, it is the Argentine, Giovani Lo Celso who comes into the team.
It is not yet clear how Spurs will line up with the inclusion of Lo Celso and Winks. It could be that Lo Celso will be playing next to Hojbjerg as a more advanced midfielder with Winks sitting behind the two.
Alternatively, Lo Celso could just slot in at left wing in place of Sonny, next to Kane and Lucas Moura. In all likelihood, we are going to see a little bit of both formations during the match as Spurs look to push forward and recover a two-goal deficit.
A couple of notable omissions on the bench for Spurs
While both Lloris and Skipp moved to the bench from their starting roles in the previous match, there were some other changes to the available substitutes. Notably, Tanguy Ndombele was not named to the bench for this match.
Ndombele walked off rather disgracefully late in the match against Morecambe and now finds himself completely out of the squad. Likewise, Sergio Reguilon has been left out, while Dele Alli remains in the team. In place of Ndombele, Reguilon, and Son, Conte has opted for youth.
Harvey White, Dane Scarlett, and Maksim Paskotsi all have joined the squad. It is pleasing to see the youth there but will be more pleasing to get a win. Let’s see how Spurs do with this new lineup.
