Three silver linings for Tottenham in first leg semifinal loss to Chelsea
By Gary Pearson
After coming down from an enraged state, thanks to Japanese mindfulness music played on loop and a neat whisky or two, I was able to calm down enough to come up three silver linings from Tottenham’s 2-0 loss to Chelsea.
It took every remaining morsel of positivity to come up with these silver linings. They are, however, tangible positives for Tottenham to focus on. There were enough negatives to harp on for days, and while it’s important for Spurs to learn from them, it’s also vital for Antonio Conte‘s side to focus on the positives.
3. Tanguy Ndombele had an encouraging showing off the bench
After a destitute first half showing, Tottenham were desperate for a modicum of inspiration after the interval. Tanguy Ndombele provided a glimmer of hope for the away side. The Frenchman reminded Chelsea that they weren’t actually taking part in a daily training session. He drove at Chelsea’s defence, created a few opportunities and brought other teammates into the fold. While his statistics weren’t awe-inspiring (one attempted shot, one dribble, 26 touches and 70 percent passing accuracy), he played with tempo and fearlessness that was palpably lacking in the first half.
Tanguy hasn’t exactly endeared himself to Conte since the gaffer’s arrival, and, while one match probably won’t change his opinion of the Frenchman, it could help garner increased attention from clubs in the transfer market.
And who knows, maybe his cameo appearance will be a turning point for Ndombele where Conte is concerned. Unfortunately for Ndombele, there’s probably more chance of the gaffer restocking the Enfield training ground with a lifetime supply of ketchup.
