Tottenham’s Matt Doherty, who isn’t a part of Antonio Conte‘s future plans at Tottenham, is reportedly being pursued by former club Wolves.

Prior to joining Spurs, the Irishman enjoyed his most fruitful season at Wolves under Nuno Espirito Santo. But the Doherty experiment has officially failed at Tottenham, with the right back one of the most likely to exit Hotspur Way in January.

Football Insider is claiming that Wolves have made an official advance to woo Doherty back to Wolves. While I’d probably trust what Football Insider has to say more than believing Romelu Lukaku‘s apology to Chelsea supporters was genuine, it’s still not the world’s most reliable journalistic source.

However, the rumour makes sense and bears weight. Doherty’s agent is Jorge Mendes, who also represents Wolves manager Bruno Lage. The super agent has clout at Wolves and should be easily able to facilitate this deal.

Tottenham purchased Doherty for £16 million in the summer of 2020, and won’t come close to recouping the full amount. Spurs will consider themselves lucky if they manage to convince Wolves to pay £10 million for the 29-year-old.

Since arriving at Tottenham, Doherty has made 39 appearances in all competitions. His offensive numbers read like a Shakespearean tragedy minus the intrigue. Four assists. That’s it. I’m pretty sure that constitutes a failed, albeit brief, marriage. While it’s too late to request an annulment, a divorce will do just fine.

Next. What to expect in first leg of Carabao Cup semifinal. dark

Doherty is more than welcome to go crawling back to his defensive ex. In fact it’s encouraged. Hopefully Football Insider is accurate with their “exclusive” yarn. Even if it is, I still won’t believe Lukaku’s apology had even a shred of authenticity behind it.
