If Tottenham is looking to upgrade on Davies

Both Bremer and Schlotterbeck are players comparable to Davies with the possibility that someday they could be better, without Spurs breaking the bank.  However, if Tottenham was to up the ante a little, they could do a bit better than find someone to push Davies, they could find a player to better him.  Here are three players we think could be an immediate upgrade on Davies at Tottenham.

Duch defender Sven Botman

Unwilling to wait for his turn as part of the Ajax assembly line, Sven Botman has been playing in Ligue One for Lillie for two seasons now. A towering defender at nearly 6’4″ (1.95 meters) Botman has surprisingly quick feet and a deft touch.

Not a speedster by any means, Botman uses his reading of the game and size to his advantage to keep attackers in front of him.

As comfortable on the ball as you would expect a player of his pedigree to be, Botman is a strong passer and as a naturally left-footed player would be a nearly like-for-like replacement on Ben Davies with more upside thanks to his youth at just 21-years of age.

Botman likely would not be as easy to get as would be Bremer or Schlotterbeck, given he is signed until 2025 and is currently valued at  $33 million (£24.4m), according to transfermarkt.com Botman would likely cost close to his full value if not more.

Tottenham defender for a decade Benoit Badiashile

Only 20-years-old but having already played more than 90 games in Ligue One for AS Monaco. Having been in the Monaco system for five years now, the Democratic Republic of Congo native is one of the best young defenders in all of France.

An excellent passer, one could easily see the skilled big-man being a top-flight defender for the next decade. Although some injuries have limited Badiashile’s availability this season – and could be a small cause for concern long-term – Benoit is a naturally left-footed defender who exudes confidence.

Valued at $30.8million (£22.76m) with a contract that expires in 2024 according to Transfermarkt.com, Badiashile could be obtainable with a smart bid.

My dream and Conte’s – Alessandro Bastoni

If Tottenham were to really listen closely to coach Conte, there is likely only one left-back whose name he is going to mention, Alessandro Bastoni. Just 22-years-old, with over 100 Serie A appearances, Bastoni was Conte’s left-back of choice at Inter during their Scudetto winning campaign.

A solid overall defender, Bastoni truly excels on the ball where he is an excellent passer, who is comfortable and confident on the ball. His range of passing truly sets him apart from the rest of the defenders in this list, as Bastoni has a terrific long ball in his bag.

Already with nine appearances for the Italian senior team, with a contract running until 2024, and a current market value of $66 million (£48.8m), according to transfermarkt.com, Bastoni is not going to come either cheap or easy.

Given the previous relationship with Conte, Spurs have at least a puncher’s chance if they were to go in for the Italian, however, spending nearly £50m on a defender does not seem like a very Tottenham thing to do, although Davinson Sanchez was not cheap.

Ultimately, Tottenham may be able to survive this season without finding additional cover for Ben Davies, however, finding that cover and maybe even an upgrade on the left-back position seems to be the most pressing need from a defensive perspective within the club and signing one of the five we’ve mentioned could do the trick.
