Several Tottenham Hotspur players had resurgent games against Liverpool, as Covid forced Antonio Conte to stretch his team but one, in particular, deserves another start.

Harry Winks put in a man-of-the-match performance and Dele Alli had his best game in nearly two years. However, after a strong outing against Liverpool, possibly his best in a Spurs shirt, it is Ryan Sessegnon who Conte needs to start again for Tottenham Hotspur.

Sessegnon off to a slow start with Spurs and Conte

Sessegnon has had a slow start to his Spurs career, with injuries and a loan being the big takeaways to this point. Conte made it clear early he was going to give Sessegnon a chance to play, using him as a substitute in some critical situations, building up to a start in Europe.

Unfortunately for Sessegnon, his big opportunity in the Conference League became a big mess. Sessegnon got red-carded and left Spurs with only 10 men for over an hour in what became a crucial loss in the competition. This was not exactly the kind of impression the young left-sider wanted to make on his coach, fortunately for Sessegnon and Spurs, Conte saw more.

Whether it was by design or forced by injuries, Sessegnon again got a chance to start again, this time against Liverpool in the league. On Sunday, Sessegnon was not great but he sure played better than he has at almost any point in his Spurs career.

Sessegnon deserves another Tottenham start

Ryan was one of several tireless workers on the day, putting in a shift on both ends, creating a decent chance for Harry Kane offensively and helping Ben Davies shut down Mo Salah on defence. Sessegnon had two crosses and six tackles playing in the left wingback position in place of Sergio Reguilon.

The ability to get up and down the flank and provide some help on both ends of the pitch is one of the main qualities Sessegnon already possessed and Conte is just starting to tap into it.

After such a good outing and having likely missed several opportunities to play more with Reguilon out injured but games postponed, Conte needs to give Sessegnon – among others – another start.

One game does not tell us if Sessegnon will suddenly come good but it certainly can be a major confidence builder. Now two or three solid performances in a row would be a different story and the way to write that story is with more minutes. With the challenge, Antonio presents defensively this is another opportunity for Sessegnon to show his worth.
