Harry Winks, with an all-round standout performance, set Tottenham Hotspur Stadium alight with an inspired outing in the 2-2 draw with Liverpool.

If you’re wondering when the last time Winks enjoyed a man of the match performance, you’re not alone.

Winks has endured an extended tumultuous stint at his boyhood club. Once Mauricio Pochettino’s go-to central midfielder, Winks, not unlike compatriot Dele Alli, has seen his prominence in the top flight fade like the colour in a 15-year-old sweater.

Which is why his superb performance against Liverpool was all the more special. Winks, with a perfectly timed slide tackle to dispossess James Milner, set the tone early for the home side.

Just a few minutes later, he followed the first act up with a stunning sequel. Pouncing on a loose Liverpool ball, Winks’ slide tackle on Sadio Mane was the catalyst for Harry Kane’s opening goal.

But it wasn’t just Winks’ impressive defensive work that made him Tottenham’s undisputed man of the match.

Everyone knows of Winks ability to break up play in midfield. It’s the Englishman’s bread and butter, precisely what turned him into a household name in north London. It was that ability to read the game and interrupt play in midfield that made him an indispensable member of Tottenham’s starting 11 during Pochettino’s tenure.
