Despite having two weeks of what should have been a break, Tottenham Hotspur is likely to have fewer players available for Newcastle than they did a fortnight before against Aston Villa before the break. Injuries and again absences may leave Spurs a bit short against Newcastle on Sunday afternoon.

Tottenham still have several players out with injury

Tottenham was top of the top heading into the first international break. However, a rash of injuries during the international play, along with the Covid imposed absences led to a terrible September, and now Spurs are midtable four points back of first place.

For two of those players, the injuries have persisted. Steven Bergwijn was finally called back to the Netherlands squad in September and then almost immediately picked up a knock. Although Bergwijn was able to return for part of one match, he then reinjured his ankle problem and has not been seen since.

Bergwijn was a big part of Spurs’ early success in terms of providing an alternative outlet to attack the opposition. The pace and power Bergwijn brings are simply something Spurs cannot replicate when he is unavailable. Heading into Friday Bergwijn has been limited and is not available according to football London.

Besides Bergwijn, Ryan Sessegnon is another who has been hampered by injuries. Sessegnon was injured playing for the England U-21 team and has not been seen since. Sessegnon has yet to really get his Spurs career on track and injuries and availability have played a major role in that. Seeing Sessegnon would be a good thing we just do not know when that will be.

Finally, some potentially good news as Ben Davies who went out with an appendix issue before the break was with the first team practicing on Thursday. Whether or not the Welsh defender plays is questionable with Sergio Reguilon ready to go but having him available is important, particularly given the other likely absences.
