Tottenham Hotspur in the midfield for the 2021/22 season
By Aaron Coe
Like with the Tottenham defense in the current rebuild, the Spur’s midfield got more of a tune-up than it did an overhaul where a change of shape may be as significant as new acquisitions.
The big transfer away in the midfield was Moussa Sissoko who had featured some 202 times over 5 seasons with the club. His replacement, 20-year-old Oliver Skipp has hit the ground running after spending last season with Norwich in the Championship.
The big change with the Tottenham midfield is not the swap of two players, rather it has been a change in formation. Now that Tottenham is running a three-man midfield under Nuno Espirito Santo, it should get the most out of the group and create some real competition for places.
Tottenham’s midfield formation
Essentially, Santo is running the midfield with a deep six – Skipp – and two eights who have been Dele Alli and Pierre-Emile Højbjerg in the Premier League thus far. The formula has not had Tottenham flying offensively but they have been balanced on defense and are creating chances.
Whether or not the three that have been starting thus far in the league will continue to be the trio or not remains to be seen. Skipp may not even be available after an injury on international duty. So here we take a look at the Tottenham midfield depth.
