Tottenham: Højbjerg, Denmark continue charge in international action
By Aaron Coe
Tuesday was another busy day for World Cup qualifying and a handful of the Tottenham Hotspur squad played a part in a most successful day.
Tottenham had four senior players in action on Tuesday, although they were originally going to have five. A reported injury to Heung-Min Son is something to be concerned about and was part of an overall bad day for the team from a physical perspective. However, for the four senior players that played is was a most successful day.
Højbjerg, Denmark continue their successful run
Pierre Højbjerg played 83 minutes for Denmark, who continues to be one of, if not the darling of the qualifying. Now with over 20 goals scored and still not even one against in qualifying, Denmark has been very impressive. Højbjerg was not the best player on the pitch Tuesday, that was Tottenham target Mikkel Damsgaard but the Spurs Viking continues to get the job done in the middle of a midfield four.
Now a perfect 6-0 in qualifying, Denmark is on an unbeaten run, whereas France was just trying to win again following a string of draws. Hugo Lloris made one save in Les Bleus’ 2-0 win over Finland.
Lloris and Højbjerg were not alone in claiming victory on Tuesday, as Steven Bergwijn was recalled to the Netherlands and started immediately in a 6-1 thrashing of Turkey. Bergwijn was subbed off and had an ice pack wrapped around his ankle a bit after the hour mark. It is unclear how serious the issue might be but Bergwijn was not limping when he came out.
Whereas Lloris, Højbjerg, and Bergwijn were all in victories on Tuesday, one Tottenham Hotspur player just did not have that bit of luck he needed. Matt Doherty was again out representing for the Republic of Ireland and was one of their best players playing on the right of a midfield five.
Unfortunately for Ireland, they were not fully prepared for what Serbia was bringing to the table and fell behind in the first 20 minutes. Ultimately Ireland tied the match on what was determined to be an own goal by Nikola Milenkovic.
The best news is these players are on the way back to Tottenham
Maybe the best news out of all four of the participants on Tuesday was that none of those four were injured. Given the absences coming and some recent injuries, Tottenham is going to need everyone they can get and can ill-afford to lose more at this early juncture in the season.
Hopefully, with as many as four first-team players participating on Thursday, there are no further injuries.
