Tottenham Hotspur likely has their best 1-2 combination for the last several seasons at goalkeeper, however, questions remain for the 2021/22 season.

Two of the three goalkeepers that were with Tottenham Hotspur to begin the 2020/21 season are now gone and some new faces have entered the frame. With new competition for captain and long-time starter Hugo Lloris from Italian loanee, Pierluigi Gollini, there are actually questions as to who may be the starter by the end of the season. However, another lingering question remains,  which likely must be answered first, which is what is the future of Hugo Lloris?

Changing of the Gloves at N17?

There were several big changes with the Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper position this past summer. First, Paulo Gazzaniga, who had backed up Hugo Lloris for several seasons – before last season – was let go as his contract ran out. Gazzaniga managed to actually stay in London, signing on a free transfer with Fulham in the Championship.

The second move was that the new back-up from last season Joe Hart who was brought in on a free transfer was sold to Celtic, opening space for another goalkeeper. Hart seemed to pass Gazzaniga last season as much on Jose Mourinho’s preferences as anything but did bring some nice attributes. His ability to command the penalty area and his booming voice which could be heard barking commands all over the pitch will hopefully be lessons that stick with Lloris and the young keepers at N17.

With a changing of the guard, at least in terms of the backup position well underway, what can we expect from the goalkeepers this season? And will one question ultimately dominate everything goalkeeper-related for Tottenham Hotspur?
