Why Watford is a really big match for Tottenham Hotspur
By Aaron Coe
The Spurs are facing some familiar foes
It is quite possible that Tottenham faces both Danny Rose and Moussa Sissoko or that they face neither of them. Either the way, having two players who had been with the club as long as both Rose and Sissoko had played, face the Spurs seems strange.
Given how long Danny has been out of the first team, that one is easier to swallow, however, if Moussa Sissoko scores against the Spurs on Sunday it will be a hard pill to swallow. Ultimately, both players gave the Tottenham faithful plenty of good memories and were very instrumental in the Champions League Final run in 2019.
You know when those two do finally play against Tottenham, whether on Sunday or New Year’s Day went the Spurs visit Vicarage Road, we can expect that little bit extra, and the team needs to be ready.
Tottenham can go top of the table
Besides the reunion and the potentially historic nature of Tottenham’s start for a new gaffer, more importantly, Tottenham has the chance to take sole possession of first place on Sunday. Such is the competitiveness of the Premier League, with just three matches left in week 3, Tottenham is the only team that has not dropped points.
If Tottenham wins on Sunday, no matter what else happens, the Spurs will go into the first international break in sole possession of first place. This is really important on a couple of levels. Having been in first place for four weeks last season The Lilywhites likely learned a few things and maybe can hold onto it or the places around first long.
Additionally, in previous seasons the Spurs have struggled to win the big game, particularly when they have been given a big opportunity, not moving into first, or back into the top four. Going into first place heading into the break after the topsy turvy summer certainly classifies as a big opportunity.
The idea that Spurs could be 2 points ahead of a four-pack and nine points above arch-rival Arsenal is about as good as this start could get and could really generate some excitement behind the team.
However, If Tottenham ends up losing or even just dropping points and falling short at their first real big opportunity of the season, it will bring back all the same questions that have plagued this club for years.
While one more win does not end those questions or dismiss them for the season, it will make for a much better and happier break. A win Sunday will mean a historic start under a new coach, first place, and just a whole lot of goodwill. Those all seem like good reasons to take this game as seriously as can be and walk away with all three points.
