Carabao Cup draw adds Wolves to busy week for Tottenham Hotspur
By Aaron Coe
The fixture congestion is just starting for Tottenham Hotspur and Wednesday’s draw for the Carabao Cup made a difficult week in September even harder.
Tottenham Hotspur was already going to have a difficult September with three straight London derbies across three weekends. And while we all knew the draw for the Carabao Cup was coming and would be played between the Chelsea and Arsenal matches, having been drawn at the Wolverhampton Wanderers, makes for a much tougher week than anyone likely anticipated.
Tottenham has been drawn at Wolves
Wednesday live on Sky Sports the draw for the third-round matches for the Carabao League Cup. During the draw, four of the 16 ties are all Premier League affairs, including Tottenham at Wolves. Besides Spurs, West Ham will travel to Old Trafford to face Manchester United, Liverpool goes to Norwich, and Chelsea will host Aston Villa.
Going again to Wolves is not a great option for Tottenham but it could have been Arsenal or Chelsea meaning Spurs would have played either in back-to-back matches. Instead, the team will make the 2.5-hour trek up the M-40 to again face Wolves.
Tottenham are going to have a busy week in September
This match will come the week of September 20, with Chelsea already scheduled for Sunday, September 19, and then Arsenal on Sunday, September 26. Ideally, Tottenham would play on Wednesday or Thursday so there is ample recovery on either side of the match against Wolves. However, the game could be played as early as Tuesday, September 21, which would only allow one day of recovery following the Chelsea game.
Both the volume of matches and the caliber of opponents only further the notion that Tottenham cannot be done in the transfer market yet. The depth of the squad is not such that Tottenham can put a Premier League caliber team on the field for all three matches in eight days. The Spurs are not light-years away from having this depth but they are certainly not there yet. And, the seriousness of the Carabao Cup draw is yet another reason, Spurs need to make some more moves.
