With Kane secure, Tottenham need to finish transfer window strong
By Aaron Coe
The news from Harry Kane on Wednesday was excellent with the Tottenham talisman committing to the club for the season, now Spurs need to close the window strong.
A saga that seemed like it would not end until September 1 and the transfer window was shut took a new turn today, as Harry Kane publicly committed himself to Tottenham for the season. With Kane’s services secure for the season, it is time for Fabio Paratici and Tottenham to close the transfer window with a bang and make Kane’s decision pay off.
Kane Committed to Tottenham, again
This was the message that all Tottenham Hotspur fans have been waiting all summer for. After spending a few too many days all too silent, Harry Kane and his new PR team seem to be getting things together. Today’s message was the most important yet if you are a Spurs supporter as Kane committed himself to the club.
While not all the fans on Twitter are going to immediately forgive and forget what has transpired over the last few weeks with Kane, Sergio Reguilón probably summed up at least this author’s mood best with his reply to Kane.
Now that the team’s talisman, the club, and the players have all kissed and made up, it is time for Fabio Paratici and Tottenham to close the window strong. With Kane in tow, the needs around the club are clearer and there is still work to do in the next six days.
How Tottenham can finish the window strong?
At this point, the needs of the team are relatively clear. The Spurs do not need a starting striker but as has been the case for most of the last several years, they do need a backup. Besides striker, the club is still a creative player in the midfield, and likely another defender – preferably a left-footed center-half but more likely a right-back.
Knowing there is not going to be a huge infusion of cash coming from the transfer of Kane, Paratici and Spurs need to be looking for bargains and the flirtation with players like Lautaro Martínez and Dušan Vlahović is likely over. I doubt any of us can envision the club spending more than £50 million on a striker to partner with Kane. However, that does not mean they cannot sign one to back him up.
Who the club will be after now and how they will fill the gaps we are going to find out. Ideally, they are players for both this season and beyond who can help the club move forward into a new era. New players mean more competition and a deeper squad both things Tottenham needs.
Regardless of who is signed the one thing they do know is they will get to play with Harry Kane for at least one season and that is about the best news a Spurs fan can get.
