Thursday marked a milestone in the preparation for the Premier League season, as Tottenham Hotspur announced the players’ numbers, and the academy is well represented.

If anyone was expecting a major announcement on a new player coming or an old player leaving on Thursday thus far, we have been disappointed. However, Tottenham Hotspur did drop the official numbers for the team’s upcoming Premier League campaign, and yes Harry Kane was included in the list. May more interesting were the seven Tottenham academy players who received numbers as well, as youth is being served at Tottenham Hotspur.

Six Academy players get a number

After consistently using many of the young players in the Tottenham Hotspur system in the preseason, that trend has the chance of continuing into the Premier League season. Not including Jack Clarke, Brandon Austin, and Cameron Carter-Vickers – who were all on loan last season and all received numbers this season – there were six academy players who received numbers.

The idea that Dane Scarlett would receive a number seemed a forgone conclusion, however, the new Tottenham number 44 (Scarlett) is being joined by several of his mates. Fellow 17-year-old forward Alfie Devine is number 45, while midfielders Harvey White and Nile John got numbers 42 and 43.

Young defenders Malachi Fagan-Walcott (46) and Maksim Paskotsi (48) also received numbers after having a solid preseason. Of course, having a number is no guarantee that anyone is going to play, however with the expanded nine-man benches in the Premier League, it could mean a few more call-ups to be part of the squad, which is all part of the learning experience.

Other new numbers for Tottenham Hotspur

The academy players were not alone in receiving numbers for the season as several younger players received numbers. Clarke is still 47 and Austin – fresh off an MLS loan – is 40. Cameron Carter-Vickers who was not assigned a number last season is number 38.

New signing Pierluigi Gollini keeps the number 22 we have seen him wear in the preseason. As for Bryan Gil, the young Spaniard not only swapped teams with Erik Lamela, but he also apparently swapped jerseys as well as Bryan will wear number 11 for the club.

No returning senior player changed his number for this season and several key numbers such as 9, 12, 13, 16, and 21 remain available if Spurs can bring in more first-team players in the transfer window.
