Excitement growing as Tottenham expected to land big money signing
By Gary Pearson
Tottenham are inching closer to landing primary transfer target Cristian Romero in a prospective deal that is creating a heightened level of excitement in north London.
After announcing the signing of Pierluigi Gollini, Tottenham’s first of the summer transfer period, anticipation is building as the club prepares for life with Romero marshalling the backline. Toby Alderweireld’s departure is almost guaranteed, leaving Spurs with more financial room to catch a big fish.
Toby is expected to sign for about £11 in Qatar as discussions continue with Al-Duhail. Even if that deal falls through, Tottenham are preparing for life without Toby when the season commences in less than a month. He has stated unequivocally his desire to leave Spurs and Nuno has agreed to let him spread his aging wings.
Spurs are prepared to splash out at least £38 million to secure Romero, who has reportedly already agreed personal terms.
Fabio Paratici is hellbent on getting this deal across the line. While at Juventus, Paratici signed Romero from Genoa in 2019, and is massive proponent of the Argentine’s. It’s unlikely anything will get in his, or Tottenham’s, way as they attempt to strengthen the club’s ailing rearguard to facilitate a successful first year for Nuno.
There are understandably a lot of complexities to a deal of this financial nature, but rest assured, Tottenham will secure their marked man. Romero is keen on joining former Atalanta teammate Gollini in north London, another reason this deal is expected to be confirmed soon.
It’s still unknown when the club will make the official announcement, but Tottenham expect to secure Romero’s signature well before the season opener against City, giving the talented centre back enough time to assimilate to his new environment.
The 22-year-old won the Copa America just a few weeks ago, celebrating his national success with soon-to-be teammate Giovanni Lo Celso, who also shares a close bond with Romero.
This signing would mark the first major signing of Spurs’ summer. And it will also probably be the club’s most expensive signing. It’s unlikely Tottenham will fork out more than £40 million for any other player this summer. Unless of course Harry Kane leaves for City, which, due to City’s unwillingness to meet Tottenham’s asking price, is looking increasingly unlikely.
