Tottenham close to officially announcing new centre back signing
By Gary Pearson
According to @CorSport, Tottenham Hotspur have agreed in principle to terms with Bologna regarding Takehiro Tomiyasu.
It’s believed Bologna have agreed to Tottenham’s £17 million bid for the towering 22-year-old. If confirmed, it would mark Tottenham’s first signing of the summer transfer period, one which stalled dramatically while awaiting confirmation of a new manager.
The Japanese international is a versatile centre back who has extensive experience playing on the right side of a back three, which Nuno is expected to deploy frequently. While it’s definitely not a blockbuster deal, Tomiyasu will offer Nuno a reliable presence in a backline he is going to reform further in coming weeks.
Spurs’ initial £15 million bid for Tomiyasu was rejected by Bologna about a week ago.
Bonuses have not yet been added to Tomiyasu’s provisional contract, but Tottenham are expected to get this transfer across the line either today or in subsequent days. It’s good news for a side in desperate need of strengthening on the backend. The prospective signing could also provide Spurs the momentum they need to secure a few more newbies in short succession.
Spurs are expected to sign at least one more centre back, with Jules Koundé the club’s primary target.
The signing of Tomiyasu will also provide Nuno the buffer he needs to sell either Davinson Sanchez or Eric Dier. Sanchez could go to Sevilla as part of any Koundé transfer, though reports out of Sevilla are skeptical about the centre back’s interest in joining Tottenham.
What do you think of Tomiyasu’s expectant arrival at Tottenham?
