If Tottenham are unable to strengthen their defensive core during the summer transfer period, who would Nuno have the confidence to start?

It’s a worst-case scenario nobody wants to consider. But as we’ve experienced before, it is a possibility. I think all of us can agree that Spurs would be in a perilous position if they are unable to strengthen their defence going into the 2021-2022 campaign.

Reportedly on the verge of signing Bologna’s Takehiro Tomiyasu, Tottenham are intent on bolstering their mistake-prone rearguard. Hopefully that signing is officially confirmed soon, so all of us can rest easy knowing at least one reinforcement is on the way.

Nuno is keen to deploy a three-at-the-back system, which Tottenham have previously attempted. Tottenham struggled most recently when they decided to play three at the back, but things should be different under Nuno, who made a living at Wolves trying to perfect the more modern formation.

While his options are currently limited, here’s who Nuno should start in a pinch, if, heaven forbid, no reinforcements are forthcoming.
