All this posturing leading Tottenham to probable outcome in manager hunt
By Gary Pearson
As time continually elapses without a manager in place, the prospect of Tottenham hiring current Belgium manager Roberto Martinez becomes evermore likely.
The Euro 2020 Final takes place on July 11, a week after Tottenham’s pre-season camp starts. Based on current performance levels and projections, Belgium manager Roberto Martinez might just lead the Red Devils to the showcase match. Belgium just knocked Portugal out of the tournament in the Round of 16 and look forward to a mouthwatering quarterfinal contest against Italy.
If Belgium lose against Italy on Friday, Martinez, in theory, would be available to report to camp either on time or just a few days tardy. And at this point, what’s a few additional days?
Spurs are entering an 11th week devoid of a captain to steer their wayward ship. Maybe Tottenham’s posturing is purposeful. Maybe, just maybe, Daniel Levy is biding time in anticipation of signing the Spaniard gaffer. Though that’s probably giving too much credit to Levy. It would mean he actually has a plan in place, an entirely confounding and unrealistic consideration.
Tottenham’s faithful are completely split on the idea of Martinez taking the helm. Though at this stage, the idea of any reputable manager taking the job should excite supporters. Martinez is, regardless of people’s opinion, a strong, reputable and respected manager. Any manager that fits that bill should now, after the horrendous ongoings of the previous 10 weeks, not only be accepted, but welcomed with open arms.
If Martinez is amenable to the position, Tottenham should do everything possible not to bundle it. He would at least stabilize a rocky ship that is in danger of capsizing. Martinez has vast experience at club and international level and has the nous to seamlessly take on the Tottenham job. The Spaniard had difficulty in his last year at Everton, particularly in terms of the Toffees’ porous defence and poor away record.
No manager throughout the duration of his career, regardless of their stature and experience, has everything his own way. The adversity Martinez went through on Merseyside helped him gain much needed experience in how to cope and adapt to similar situations.
Tottenham would be negligent, even harebrained, not to take a chance on Martinez, who might actually steer Belgium to European glory. Yes, Belgium have a star-studded lineup that has arguably underperformed during Martinez’s reign. But they are the top-ranked team in the world, and that accomplishment is no small feat.
And if the Red Devils win three more matches on the trot they’ll be conquerers of Europe. Even if they fall short of their ultimate goal, Martinez is a candidate Tottenham should, considering everything that has happened, pursue at all costs.
