Pierre Hojberg, the standout Tottenham performer thus far at Euro 2020, has been instrumental in helping propel Denmark to a quarterfinal berth.

One of Spurs’ most consistent performers of last season, Hojberg has found a second wind after an exhausting campaign, which has buoyed his nation’s chances of returning to a semifinal at a European Championship for the first time since Denmark’s only major title in 1992.

Hojberg has expectedly led the charge defensively for the Danes. His dogged, determined approach at the heart of Denmark’s midfield has been key in snuffing out any prolonged attacking forays by opposing sides.

Hojberg not only offers reliable protection for his back three but also fills in when Jens Larsen or Joakim Mæhle make one of their galavanting runs into the attacking third. Offering a beacon of sturdiness, steadiness and strength, Hojberg has been an inspiration for his teammates.

While Hojberg’s impressive defensive outings have come as no surprise, it’s his work on the offensive side of the ball that has garnered the most attention. Hojberg has three assists in Denmark’s first four games at Euro 2020. That’s just one assist shy of the four he accumulated in 38 Premier League matches last season.

Hojberg’s main responsibility for Denmark remains the same as it is at club level: to disrupt the opposition attack, frustrate and physically wear down key playmakers. Those priorities are Hojberg’s bread and butter, but he is permitted more of an opportunity to advance into the opposing half with Denmark, thanks in large part to his partner’s defensive awareness. Thomas Delaney, who plays at the heart of defensive midfield for Borussia Dortmund, makes it possible for Hojberg to roam with slightly more freedom.
