If we are to blindly believe Sky Sports, Tottenham have once again renewed their interest in signing Norwich right back Max Aarons.

While the Sky Sports article pronouncing Spurs’ interest in the 21-year-old is devoid of defined sources, Spurs have been prowling on the periphery for almost two years where Aarons is concerned.

Aarons had just signed a new contract with Norwich when Spurs elevated their interest in the then-19-year-old. At that time, it was purported that Aarons would have cost Tottenham a maximum of £20 million. He’s now worth about £30 million, though Transfermarkt undercuts his current value, estimating his worth at under £20 million.

It is thought that Aarons is also wanted by Everton and, to a lesser extent, Manchester United. But here’s the rub: Aarons, who still has three years remaining on his contract, was an instrumental part in spearheading Norwich’s revival to the Premier League.

The Canaries dominated the Championship, eventually topping Watford by six points to win the division and gain promotion to the top flight.

It would take a pretty compelling offer for Norwich to hand over Aarons to the likes of Everton, United or Tottenham, especially after just gaining promotion. It would make more sense for Norwich to offload Aarons if they were making the drop to the Championship.

Selling one of their most prized assets as they prepare for life in the Premier League, unless an offer comes in way above market value, doesn’t add up. The 21-year-old is undoubtedly a crucial element to Norwich’s Premier League survival hopes.

There is no question that Aarons would make a brilliant addition to the right side of Spurs defence, especially considering the probable departure of Serge Aurier.

But it will take an over-the-top offer to secure his signature. And when have we ever known Daniel Levy to offer significantly more than market value to land any player?

So for now, I’ll chalk this one up to Sky Sports’ propensity to publish a sensational, attention-grabbing headline. Though I hope I’m wrong.
