Tottenham linked with more complements not replacements for Harry Kane
By Aaron Coe
Tottenham Hotspur is again linked with two different strikers, but much like last week, neither replaces, only complements Harry Kane.
Seeing strikers linked with Tottenham Hotspur should come as no surprise to anyone. Even if Kane stays at N17, the Spurs still need some real cover and a true complement for their talisman. Last week Tottenham Hotspur was being linked with Marcus Thuram and Diego Rossi. This week there are two new strikers being tossed around for Tottenham, Nicolas “Nico” Gonzalez and Joaquin Correra.
Like Rossi and Thuram before them, neither Gonzalez nor Correra can be considered seriously as a replacement for Kane.
Tottenham talisman plays a different role
Gonzalez, a 23-year-old Argentine who is currently playing for VfB Stuttgart in Germany, is a left winger. Much like Thuram and Rossi, Gonzalez seems more likely a replacement/competition for Heung-Min Son on the wing than for Kane up top. Gonzalez only played 1000 minutes in all competitions for Stuttgart, so it is unlikely he would be ready to walk in and replace Kane in any case.
With a goal every 156 minutes in just 900 Bundesliga minutes, Gonzalez can be effective and score. However, he lacks the experience to be a true replacement for a player like Kane, but could effectively play off the English captain.
Joaquin Correa is a bit older and more experienced than Gonzalez, having played nearly 200 senior matches in Europe between Sevilla and Lazio, where he is currently playing. Unlike the other three players linked to Spurs, Correa is a true striker, although he more often plays as a second striker than as an out and out center forward. Correa had 11 goals and six assists in almost 2700 minutes in all competitions this past season for Lazio.
Correa and Gonzalez battling for Argentina playing time
Also an Argentine like Gonzalez, Correa has been capped six times since 2017. As part of the current Copa America squad, Correa will be looking to make an impact in limited minutes. Part of the limitation in Correa’s minutes is playing behind Gonzalez, who started at left wing against Chile this week.
Ultimately, both Correa and Gonzalez are decent enough prospects but neither are really replacements for Kane. They might be effective at playing with and off Spurs’ star, but they are not going to replace him. The fact that Spurs are continuing to be linked with complementary not replacement attackers bodes well for Kane’s future at N17.
