Tottenham has made exceptional headway in their quest to bring Mauricio Pochettino back to Hotspur Way, with only one main hurdle left to navigate.

It’s incredible to think what can happen in a few days. Rumours of Tottenham’s interest in reuniting Pochettino with his former club broke on Tuesday.

Since then the improbable has become ever more possible. There is now real hope for what, just a week ago, might have felt more like fantasy. The Guardian today reported that Pochettino is keen to return to Spurs and complete his unfinished business at the club.

Now there is only one main hurdle that stands in Tottenham and Pochettino’s way. PSG is thus far steadfast against the idea of letting Pochettino return to his former club. While Pochettino’s first year in the French capital was far from flawless — PSG got knocked out of the Champions League semifinal and failed to win Ligue 1 for the first time since 2016-2017 — the club is not interested in the disruption losing their manager would cause.

It’s no easy feat selecting and securing the right manager to lead a club forward. Just ask Tottenham, who sacked Jose Mourinho devoid of any contingency plan. Now the club is clamouring to find a suitable replacement.

PSG wants to avoid that scenario at all costs. However, the financially secure French club might not have a choice. When a manager has his heart set on leaving, It’s hard, even inconceivable, to force him to stay. It’s also entirely counterproductive.

Reports out of Italy, according the Guardian, suggest that Pochettino is also skeptical about continually working with PSG’s sporting director Leonardo. The pair have different visions and, based on the current trajectory, it’s likely their relationship would eventually become untenable.

The big question remains: Will PSG do their utmost to scupper Tottenham’s advances or will the French Ligue 1 runners up realize the gravity of their current quagmire and give into Pochettino’s desires to return to north London?

If PSG’s stance changes, the likelihood of Pochettino’s miraculous return to Tottenham would become evermore possible, even probable. However, let’s not get our hopes up too much, as these situations are incredibly fluid, sensitive and often precarious.

One moment can change everything and we all know how much can transpire in a 24-hour span. Speaking of moments, another development has occurred that could hamstring Tottenham’s advances. Real Madrid has reportedly made contact with Pochettino, something Spurs supporters did not want to hear.

The latest developments, though, are an encouraging sign. Let’s hope Tottenham’s embattled Chairman pulls out whatever stops are necessary to bring the Messiah home.

Maybe, just maybe we have another off-field Amsterdam miracle in the making.
