Tottenham player ratings in 2-1 loss to Aston Villa
By Gary Pearson
Defence
Hugo Lloris 5/10
Had no chance on either Villa goal. Looked slightly dodgy early when he misjudged a long aerial ball. His reaction could have led to a penalty. He might have been more aware on Reguilon’s own goal, but you can’t really fault him for not keeping that perplexing scuff out.
Sergio Reguilon 2/10
Reguilon, after unofficially assisting on Tottenham’s goal, endured a dismal outing, highlighted by an outrageously bizarre own goal. Matters got worse for the Spaniard, who coughed up possession twice deep in his own third, allowing Watkins in on goal. Eric Dier couldn’t make up enough ground as Watkins strolled in to finish with ease.
Eric Dier 3/10
Eric Dier has for some time been way off the pace, which was yet again the case in this one. Needlessly conceding possession and appearing like he’s trudging in quicksand, Dier is a liability. His needless giveaway in the dying embers of the first half almost cost his side a goal, but Lloris came to his rescue. At least he followed up and knocked the rebound away to safety.
Toby Alderweireld 6/10
Toby was once again the rock in central defence, making up for Dier’s ineptitude. The Belgian made some key last-gasp tackles while doing his utmost to offset his partner’s errant ways.
Japhet Tanganga 7/10
Japhet was solid throughout. He made some cracking tackles — his most robust of which on Jack Grealish — and was positionally sound throughout. He didn’t offer much going forward, but that’s not what he’s in the team for. Best of Spurs’ backline before suffering an injury.
