The rumours of a potential move that would see RB Leipzig’s Marcel Sabitzer sign with Tottenham this summer have resurfaced, causing tempered excitement among supporters.

The Austrian has been intermittently linked to Tottenham since RB Leipzig ousted the north London club in last season’s Campions League Round of 16. Spurs were reported to be in hot pursuit of the attacking midfield during the previous transfer window.

The attacking midfielder’s contract is set to expire in just over a year, providing Tottenham an easier path to securing his services. Leipzig should be willing to sell Sabitzer, one of their prized assets, for a fee of between £30 and £35 million.

Spurs, taking into consideration the financial toll the pandemic along with the crippling overhead cost of the new stadium, aren’t in a particularly prosperous financial situation and would have to sell a few players to come up with the funds.

While procuring an attacking midfielder isn’t Tottenham’s top priority, a player of Sabitzer’s outstanding quality would be immeasurably advantageous. He would be a perfect solution in support of Harry Kane. The Austrian would also round out Spurs’ attacking quartet, complementing nicely Sonny and Gareth Bale. He would also provide much needed competition for the No. 10 role.

Sabitzer is a more natural fit than both Tanguy Ndombele and Giovanni Lo Celso in the No. 10 role. He is a formidable threat and is equipped with the skillset to significantly contribute offensively.

The Austrian, who is reportedly in favour of a move to Spurs, is 27 years old and has a few of his best years still ahead of him. Tottenham probably won’t go out of their way to make the Austrian a priority, but maybe they should, as he could be the piece required to complete Tottenham’s offensive puzzle.
