Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur League Cup History
By Aaron Coe
The 2021 League Cup Final, which historically takes place much earlier was delayed in the hope of having fans – of which several thousand will be in attendance. For Tottenham Hotspur, a lot has transpired since they qualified for the League Cup Final on January 5. At that point, Tottenham fans were still having dreams of up to four trophies, today, we are hoping for the one. Ultimately, that is what the League Cup Final is, a chance to hope your team does something magical and at the moment, dethrones Manchester City in what has become the City open over the last several years.
Tottenham vs City in the League Cup
Tottenham and Manchester City will be facing each other for the fourth time in the League Cup competition. In the three previous League Cup meetings, the Spurs triumphed over the team from the north. Back in 1992, Spurs beat City 0-1 in the third round before bowing out in the next round to Nottingham Forrest.
The two teams met again in 2003-2004 with the Lilywhites winning 3-1 in from of more than 31,000 fans at White Hart Lane, in the Round of 16. The Spurs then lost to Middlesborough in the quarterfinals. Most recently Tottenham won 0-2 at the Etihad in the 2007-08 version of the competition. That also happens to be the last season Spurs won the competition.
Old vs New Powers in English Football
Both Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City have histories and traditions. However, for Tottenham, the majority of the success is from a further back, whereas Manchester City has been the club of today. When Tottenham was last in the League Cup Final, way back in 2015, it was the eighth final for the Spurs, with four wins in those eight matches.
Alternatively, Manchester City had only twice been to the final and had won once and lost once. In the six seasons since Tottenham was last in the Cup Final, City has been in the final five times – including this season – and has won it on all four previous occasions. In fact, in five of the last seven seasons, the League Cup has ended with Manchester City winning.
While Tottenham has been on their barren run, Manchester City has run wild. When old powers meet the new powers, Spurs fans will have to hope the history comes through. So the Spurs have three straight wins over Manchester City in this competition and Manchester City has won the competition three straight times. If this tells us anything it is that anything can happen and that is what the Spurs need.
