On Loan Tottenham left-sider Ryan Sessegnon goes full 90

Based on the tremendous success found in the first half of his loan at Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga, Ryan Sessegnon playing for 90 minutes would not make headlines. However, Sessegnon completed his first 90 minutes on loan since January, making it something Tottenham fans ought to know.

The truth is it was probably expected that Ryan Sessegnon would have a bit of an up and down season, which is why the young (20) left sider went on loan, to begin with. The Englishman was arriving after the season had started and was trying to break into a new side as well as a new country, league, and language.

After a sprinkling of minutes in the Bundesliga in October and some real minutes in Europa League, Sessegnon was left to sink or swim in the league line starting in November. For a stretch of nine straight matches from November 2 through January 2, Sessegnon starting and played the full 90 minutes.

Ryan was playing both left midfield and left-back, similar to the role of Sergio Reguilón at Spurs this season. Even better, the team was starting to see production, as Sessegnon had two goals and two assists over his last seven matches before an injury against SC Freiburg.

Sessegnon was derailed by injury

Since suffering a knock in early January, Ryan Sessegnon has only made six total appearances for 187 total minutes, according to transfermrket.com. The tough part is Sessegnon has not been injured the entire time. In fact, Ryan has been available since late February and simply has not been receiving the regular minutes we would like to all see.

Sessegnon was finally back in the starting line-up as a left outside midfielder for Hoffenheim on Tuesday. According to whoscored.com, Ryan Sessegnon was the highest-rated player for Hoffenheim and the second-highest overall in the match. Sessegnon’s major contributions came defensively in a match that ended 0-0.

Sessegnon did not pass particularly well completing only 65% of just 20 attempts, but he did have eight successful tackles, three clearances, and four interceptions. We do want to see his work on the ball improve but good to know he was aggressive defensively.

Regardless of the overall result for Hoffenheim, as a Tottenham fan, it was just good to see Ryan Sessegnon finally get 90 minutes again. Let us hope that continues for the remainder of the season and then the team can make a better, more informed decision on what to do with a more experienced youngster, next.
