Tottenham Hotspur still has an opportunity to do something big this season as the team can still very much finish in the top four and win a trophy in the Carabao Cup. Regardless of the outcome of either of those events, there are some positions on the field that Tottenham simply needs to improve or have more depth in.

The results of the season will impact how much money Tottenham ultimately has to spend but the Spurs will have to address these areas no matter what. Here we cover the five positions most in need of attention from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer transfer window to compete at the top of the Premier League.

Tottenham Needs to Beyond Center Back

Over the last couple of days, HotspurHQ has explored the options for a left-sided center-back. Several options can help the team more immediately or might be the right fit for now with room to grow even more. Given the team does not have one player who is a natural left-sided center-back on the roster, the need is obvious.

Center-back has been an issue off and on all season and getting someone who is a natural on the left will help balance things. The play was never this unbalanced in the back with Jan Vertonghen in the side. That said as poorly as play has been, likely a right-sided center-back is not on the agenda.

Given that Toby Alderweireld, Davinson Sanchez, and Joe Rodon are all naturally right-sided center-halves the position should be covered. If you add in Eric Dier and Japhet Tanganga there are five players in the team who all could argue one position is their best, right-sided center back. This does not even include Juan Foyth who could return on loan and has gotten minutes at RCB at Villareal – among other positions – himself.

The point is, despite the play from the back two, fixing the one position should in theory help both positions as players can focus and play more naturally. So since we have covered the center-back situation, this is where else we believe Tottenham needs to upgrade to help this team take the next step as a club.
