The fact that Gareth Bale came out and said he his basically using Tottenham Hotspur this season was a surprise but not surprising. Anyone that has followed Tottenham Hotspur this season knows that Gareth Bale is at Tottenham for himself and Wales more than anything. However, it was still a bit surprising to hear Bale come out and say it.

Bale and Tottenham Using Each Other

The reality is the entire relationship and loan has been one based on a win-win scenario for both parties – Tottenham and Gareth Bale. It was clear that Gareth Bale was not going to get significant playing time under Zinedine Zidane at Real Madrid and if he was going to impact Wales and try to carry them to the World Cup, Bale needed to be at his best.

As we saw with his fall performance, playing two games for 90 minutes after not building up the appropriate fitness was bad for Bale. It was not from Real Madrid that  Bale came with an injury from, it was Wales. Until he completely retires from world football Gareth Bale will be part of the Wales National Team and that team is the most important football team to Bale, we all knew this.

So we have a player that wants to play for his national team and play well, as well as a player in need of real fitness to do that and this is where Tottenham comes in. While not clear at the beginning, it was obvious two weeks ago as Bale conveniently got to his top performance just ahead of the impending international break that this was all about Wales.

While Tottenham has gotten 10 goals – some pretty important – in 25 appearances, Bale has not consistently impacted the side. Sure Tottenham has gotten more press and likely sold a lot of #9 jerseys, I know I have one, this was never a long-term deal and we knew that.

Going back to Madrid has always been the plan – at least above the board – so that is not a surprise. What is ultimately surprising about all of this is just the way Bale came out and basically said he was using Tottenham to “get match fit” as it is not something we all expected to hear. Regardless if it was expected or not, deep down inside it was something we all already knew.
