As happens every time Tottenham Hotspur fails to win a trophy, the chorus of articles noting Harry Kane wants out begins. However, following the victory over Aston Villa, if you listen closely to the words of Harry Kane and his coach José Mourinho, you hear a player and manager singing the same tune, which includes words all Tottenham fans want to hear.

Europa League Still Stings

No matter how we try to sugarcoat things and as much as the three points earned Sunday at Villa help the cause, the exit from Europa League is going to sting for some time. Fortunately, it seems we as fans are not the only ones stung.

In his post-match interview, José Mourinho was talking about how he was happy about the win over Villa but simultaneously sad to think about 48 hours earlier. Essentially, Mourinho was saying if we can dig deep and play as a unit to beat Villa, why could we not do it two days earlier, is inexplicable.

Mourinho went on to talk about how the “scar” left from the loss will be with him for a long time. However, slowly winning as a team, fighting together for each other can help overcome the loss. Kane was less metaphoric in his feelings about the loss from Thursday, noting that the way the team lost was “embarrassing for us as players” in his post-match interview Sunday.

Kane talked about the team falling below their “standard” and having everyone work hard in the same direction is the start of where they need to go.

Consistency is still what Tottenham lacks

Both Mourinho and Kane were saying the same thing about one game being just that one game. Both Mourinho and Kane talked about the need to provide the effort that Tottenham did every match. For Mourinho, it is one of the key challenges for the team.

Mourinho said that he thinks the “next challenge for this team is to have a performance like this” at every game. Specifically, the this Mourinho is looking for is a “state of mind this collective soul, to have these every game” not just after a bad game or two. In other words, Mourinho is looking for a little consistency.

At this point, consistency is something that has alluded this team all year long but no better time than the stretch run to find it. The best news of all is that Kane and Mourinho still are saying the same basic things, and if the coach and our most important player are united, everyone else can fall in line or leave.

Now with a break and fewer matches than anticipated left to play over the next couple of months, maybe, just maybe that consistency can be found.
