Tottenham Defensive Ratings

After finding some defensive rhythm and shape over the last few matches facing opponents in some kind of 4-4-2, Tottenham never really adapted to the overloads on the Spurs’ right flank and it cost Tottenham dearly. Combine that with individual errors and it was a day Tottenham would have been lucky to take a point from.

Sergio Reguilón- 5.5

Sergio Reguilón had his moment when he got the hockey assist on Tottenham’s lone goal. Outside of that play, however, Sergio had a rough day at the office, although not as rough as some. Reguilón had a bad giveaway early in the match that led to Arsenal hitting the crossbar and pretty much set the tone fr the day for the entire team. Never looked as confident on the ball as he normally does after that yet was better than most on the pitch.

Toby Alderweireld – 6

Toby Alderweireld really did not do anything wrong for Tottenham. His attempted block of Martin Ødegaard in the first half went through his legs and past a helpless Hugo Lloris. Saw a lot of the ball and passed well overall, but had few incisive passes as Arsenal pressed hard to not allow the Belgian time on the ball.

Davinson Sanchez – 5

Davinson Sanchez was Tottenham’s best defender on the day until he was not. Sanchez was excellent in the air and was playing excellent in open space, making key tackles all over the defensive third of the pitch. Unfortunately, it was Sanchez who was late coming in – after Alexander Lacazette had already swung and missed the ball – that was called for the penalty kick and the game-winner. While there really is little doubt about that call, it just makes you further question the agenda given the lack of a call for Tanguy Ndombele earlier in the week on similarly clumsy defending, only Tanguy still had the ball.

Matt Doherty – 3

Matt Doherty had a super stinker of an afternoon. Beaten often and badly – particularly on the first Arsenal goal – Doherty needed help and never got it. Mikel Arteta is not a great coach but anyone can see Gareth Bale is not interested in playing much defense and Arsenal simply overloaded the Tottenham right and Spurs never fully adjusted. While Doherty needed help, he also did little well as his deficiencies on the ball certainly limited the ability to push Kieran Tierney back.

Hugo Lloris – 5.5

Hugo Lloris was unlucky on the first goal which left him sprawling once defected and was just beaten on the penalty. Did end up spilling his one save and was saved twice by the woodwork after being beaten on two other occasions. Did well early to come out farther than he has in a while to clear the ball, but seemed to be lacking in confidence like everyone on the day.
