Moving Day for Tottenham in Climb for Top Four in EPL
By Aaron Coe
After spending most of December in first-place, Tottenham Hotspur spent all of February in 8th place or worse. Following a draw by Aston Villa another home loss for Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur find themselves in a position to move up the table. With a win and three points against Crystal Palace this evening, Tottenham can move up to sixth for the first time since January, at least for a day.
Who Wants Top Four
Despite a run where Tottenham Hotspur lost five out of seven games in the League, inconceivably Spurs are still in the hunt for the top four. Currently, Spurs are one of only three teams – along with Manchester City and Everton who are even on a two-game winning streak at current. So inconsistent is the form across the league that Liverpool has now lost five of their last six and still sit in 7th.
The good news for Tottenham is they have some games in hand and after a win saw them sit languidly in 8th, a win today moves Spurs ahead of Liverpool and brings them even with West Ham on points and ahead on goal difference in 6th place. Sure West Ham plays on Monday and can go back in front of the Spurs but at least the pressure would be on the Hammers to win.
Everton and Chelsea trying to Run Away
While Liverpool, West Ham, and Villa all start to sputter, Everton and Chelsea have quietly put together some positive play. Chelsea is still unbeaten under new coach Thomas Truchel and Everton have won three straight. Spurs do have a game in hand on Chelsea, but even with the three points will be 2 back of the Blues.
Everton is currently 4 points up on Spurs on 46 points with the same 26 games played. Of course, Everton and Chelsea play on Monday so something has to give.
Tottenham must get three points today
Ultimately, while teams can drop points around Tottenham unless Spurs do the job and come away with the full three points against Palace, it does not matter. Too many times over the last month Tottenham has had the opportunity to make up ground, only to disappoint. If Spurs can get it together and take all three – as they should – suddenly something that seemed impossible – making the top four – will be back in the picture.
