3. Tottenham held on to a one-goal first half lead

Tottenham, for the first time this season, maintained and held on to a one-goal first half lead. It’s a truly remarkable statistic, showcasing exactly why Tottenham aren’t currently sitting in a top four spot in the table.

On four previous occasions this season, Tottenham went into the locker room at halftime with a one-goal lead and failed to secure all three points. On Sept. 27 Callum Wilson equalized from a penalty in the 97th minute to give Newcastle a share of the spoils at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

History repeated itself on Dec. 13, when Jeffrey Schlupp scored in the 81st minute to gain Crystal Palace parity. That match ended level at one a piece. Two weeks later at Mollineux, Tottenham allowed Wolves to equalize in the 86th minute. And for the pièce de résistance we turn to Jan. 13, when Fulham scored in the 74th minute to leave Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with a single point.

Tottenham on Thursday evening managed not to concede late, holding on to the slimmest of margins.

It was dubious streak Jose Mourinho and company are elated to be rid of. While there’s no question they did it the hard way, Tottenham finally exorcised those demons. Throwing everyone behind the ball and scrapping tooth and nail for each challenge, Jose’s men crawled across the line. The most important aspect is not how they got over the line, just that they did.
