Dele Alli, who scored on a sublime overhead kick while adding a pair of beautiful helpers, dominated proceedings, helping Tottenham brush Wolfsberger aside on route to the Europa League Round of 16.
The English midfielder was an instrumental part of Tottenham’s 4-0 win on the night. His early insurance marker, thanks to a goal-of-the-season candidate, got Spurs off to precisely the start they desired.
Dele’s bicycle kick was a bedazzling bit of skill, reminding Jose Mourinho of what he is capable of. Receiving a crisp pass from Matthew Doherty, Dele had it all to do. An initial touch that bounced true off the pristine Tottenham Hotspur Stadium pitch was followed by superlative technique and the purest of contacts. Whether he would have been afforded that time and space in the Premier League is a moot point. Spectacular and crafty, Dele staked his claim to be involved from the start of more top flight encounters.
Alli then set Carlos Vinicius up on a plate in the second half, delivering a pinpoint cross which the Brazilian feasted on, heading in from close range.
Going into the match with a comfortable 4-1 aggregate lead allowed Tottenham to play a no-pressure style, replete with flair and enterprise rarely seen this season. It was refreshing to watch. Spurs should be able to enjoy their football not just against inferior sides, but versus top calibre Premier League teams.
Creativity oozed out of Tottenham’s attackers, with Steven Bergwijn and Erik Lamela getting in on the act on various promising offensive forays. Lamela repeatedly slalomed through Wolfsberger’s defence while Bergwijn showed positive intent in possession.
Gareth Bale then got in on the act upon his introduction, smashing home with aplomb from another Dele assist. Vinicius added another goal to his tally after capitalizing on an egregious Wolfsberger error.
While the tie was never in doubt, Spurs stuck to the task at hand, ensuring a comfortable home win and a stress-free 8-1 aggregate win.
