Tottenham Hotspur allowed Chelsea FC to knock the ball around just freely enough to earn a cheap penalty, which was more than enough to top Spurs. Chelsea were really only good when Spurs did something wrong, yet the Blues dominated the majority of the match. On a day when Tottenham really needed to show something as a team, they looked lost collectively and most looked disinterested individually.

Serge Aurier Tottenham’s Top Player

Serge Aurier is a solid fullback and he is a decent winger. However, in the current set-up he is being asked to do either to little or too much of both and we are left with a player often in no-man’s land. Despite essentially being positioned to fail – as is Davies on the other side – Serge Aurier had the best chances for Spurs offensively and had a rather critical block on the defensive side as well.

Aurier created as much offense as anyone.

Tottenham do not approach a match like Liverpool intent on making a ton of crosses. That said, some of the most dangerous passes in football are crosses and Aurier knocked in two decent crosses for Spurs. The one at 87 minutes maybe could have been buried, but should not have been the only chance like it.

Besides sending in crosses Aurier picked up a foul in a good position to set up a free kick a few minutes before halftime, which he then won in the box. The only thing Aurier did not do was finish his header and tie the match, otherwise he did more than anyone else offensively.

Serge made on really excellent tackle.

Just before the hour mark Chelsea were working through the middle and on the attack. Mason Mount was able to play in Timo Werner who had position on Toby Alderweireld and was looking likely to score. Serge Aurier had noticed the play as it was coming through the middle and hustled back in defense.  Just as Werner was going to strike the ball, Aurier was able to come in on the tackle and block the ball away for a corner kick. Aurier likely saved a sure goal and kept Spurs in the match.

Despite some great efforts from Serge Aurier and a few others, it was not enough, so how did the team rate?
