Tottenham Substitutes and Coach Rating

Tottenham used all three substitutes starting with Vinicius coming on at the break and switching up the formation. The reality is Vinicius should have been on from the beginning and Spurs should have been aggressive from the off. Five backs never works and we saw that again today, because that was not 3.

Carlos Vinicius – 7

Carlos Vinicius needed to be on the field the full 90 minutes and maybe things would have been differently. Unlike any of the starters on the pitch, Vinicius at least forces the defense to have to account for someone. Was okay as a target and had a nice turn and shot on frame. If Spurs are going to get out of their funk with Kane injured, Vinicius will have to be a big part of it, but needs to play enough to make that happen.

Lucas Moura – 6

Lucas Moura came on for the last 30 minutes of the match for Gareth Bale and really did not do anything more than the Welshman had. If Spurs are going to not be able to move the ball forward, then it will be difficult for the flare players like Moura and Bale to have an impact. Was active, just not too productive.

Erik Lamela – 6

Came on and was a shell of his former self. Lamela got on the ball a couple times but was lacking the quality to do anything special with it. More concerning, Lamela did not have one defensive action. Not a block, an interception, not even a foul, such was the lack of activity from the Argentine. Was particularly wasteful on a free kick late, as it would have taken something more special than Lamela has in the toolkit to score from 40 straight away. Wasteful.

José Mourinho – 5

I want to give Mourinho time and am not part of the José out crowd, however performances like Sunday live one scratching their head about the coach and practice. The terrible free kicks, the lack of any fluidity in movement, the strange formations, all look like a team completely devoid of ideas and lost at sea. How this team when from so good to so bad so quickly is anyone’s guess. However, whatever magic Mourinho seemed to be applying early has worn off and we just need better.
