Tottenham Get Changes and a Little Clarity in Schedule
By Aaron Coe
After waiting until the last minute to postpone Tottenham Hotspur and Fulham a few weeks back, the Premier League is working to be proactive with latest change.
It was clear that José Mourinho was upset about the late hour of the Premier League notifying Tottenham Hotspur the match versus Fulham was being postponed in late December. With questions swirling about Spurs next opponent – Aston Villa – and their own Covid issues, the Premier League was more proactive and decisive this week for Tottenham. Add in the fact that the FA Cup drew for the fourth and fifth rounds and suddenly Spurs have more focus than before, but still, have lots of questions about the schedule.
Aston Villa is Off for Now
José Mourinho was receiving questions about the match as soon as the post-match interview from Marine and at that time said Spurs were playing Aston Villa. However, rather than waiting until the last minute again, the Premier League got out in front of the Tottenham Villa match, which was scheduled for Wednesday January 13.
Fulham Back On
Given this would now be yet another game-in-hand for Spurs, the League was proactive and rescheduled the postponed Fulham match for Wednesday instead. This means Spurs keep the same number of games in hand, just change the opponent. While not ideal, considering Tottenham were preparing for Fulham in the last fortnight it is not the end of the world.
FA Cup Draws Complete
Monday evening also saw the FA Cup complete the draw for both the 4th and 5th rounds of the competition, with Tottenham having advanced with the win over Marine FC on Sunday.
4th Round Draw
Tottenham were drawn in the fourth round against Wycombe Wanders for the Championship. Whereas the last two championship clubs Spurs faced – Brentford and Stoke – were both top half teams, Wycombe is currently in last place in the 24-team competition. That said, as Leeds United found out this past weekend anything can happen in the FA Cup.
That fourth-round match will be played on either Saturday January 23 or Sunday January 24 and will likely – barring any schedule re-arrangement – be Spurs last match before facing Liverpool to kick off the ‘second half’ of the Premier League season on January 28.
5th Round Draw
The fifth round of the FA Cup – currently slated for the week of February 8th – will feature the winner of the Tottenham at Wycombe match playing at the winner of Everton vs Sheffield. While most would be expecting a Tottenham at Everton fifth round affair, in the FA Cup anything can happen.
The good news is Spurs know what to expect and what they need to do to reach the quarterfinals of the Cup in March. Of course, it all starts by beating Wycombe. However, before Spurs even get to Wycombe it is back to the Premier League with Fulham now on tap for Wednesday and Sheffield United scheduled for Sunday.
