Tottenham’s dynamic duo reach combined milestone
By Gary Pearson
Tottenham’s Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min are now level with Alan Shearer and Chris Sutton for most goal combinations in a Premier League season.
Kane set Son up for Spurs’ second goal during Saturday’s 3-0 win. Son’s 100th goal for the club was the 13th the duo have combined for in just 16 Premier League matches this season. That puts them joint top on the all-time Premier League list, equalling the total output of Shearer and Sutton during Blackburn’s 1994-95 title winning season.
With 22 matches remaining, Son and Kane will certainly pass the Blackburn duo for top spot. It’s a remarkable return from Tottenham’s most prolific attackers, who have found the type of chemistry other duos can only dream of.
Kane, who has 10 goals and 11 assists, has found incredible success by dropping deeper into midfield. Jose Mourinho can take his share of credit for asking Kane to acquit himself in more of a playmaking role. He is still scoring at an impressive rate, but offers immeasurably more to his colleagues, with Son the main benefactor. Kane stands alone atop the Premier League assist chart, with Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne sitting in second place with eight helpers.
Son is just a goal off the pace for the top flight’s Golden Boot. The South Korean, thanks in large part to Kane’s assists, trails Mo Salah, who has played a match more than Son.
The pair have scored 22 of Tottenham’s 29 (76 percent) Premier League goals. That demonstrates how much the Lilywhites rely on their two superstars to provide the offensive output.
Few opponents have figured out how to nullify their threat. The worrying thing, however, is those that have snuffed out their formidable threat often leave with either a share of the spoils or all three points.
Kane and Son’s partnership is worth celebrating, as having two match winners who combine so effortlessly and effectively is more rare than watching Sheffield United win. Now imagine the heights Spurs could ascend once they find the formula that adds goals from the supporting cast.
