Tottenham Hotspur Player Ratings from Loss to Leicester City
By Aaron Coe
Defensive Ratings
The reality is that the Tottenham defense really did not have a ton to do on Sunday and even then, they did not do it well. Tottenham simply conceded too much possession yet again– particularly in the first half – and it continues to put strain on the defense. Against Leicester the strain became too great and Spurs made the kind of mental mistakes tired defenses do that lose teams games.
Hugo Lloris – 6
Hugo Lloris was excellent against Liverpool, however, on a day when Spurs needed something even more than excellent Lloris could not deliver. Vardy kicked the penalty straight down the middle, had Lloris held his ground he would have easily saved it. On the own goal, Vardy won the header inside the six. Hugo Lloris needs to claim that ball and not let Vardy have that chance. Instead he stood still hoping for a clearance and Spurs beat themselves.
Sergio Reguilón – 6.5
Sergio Reguilón never made any big mistakes that you could easily see on the left today. However, Reguilón was one of three defenders who did absolutely nothing as James Justin dribbled up and dropped the ball to Mark Albrighton to make the cross for the second Leicester goal. Someone must step up and take the man, everyone cannot continue to back up. Sergio offered little going forward with only 1 accurate cross on the afternoon. After an excellent start to his Tottenham career has left something to be desired for the last few weeks.
Eric Dier – 6
Eric Dier has consistently been the worst defender for Tottenham for the last 10 days. Dier has been a step slow and his passing has been downright terrible. If Eric Dier continues to lead the team in touches and passing attempted Tottenham are going to continue to lose. Dier can be a good defensive leader, but Spurs need more and right now the English defender is not providing it. Some time watching would be nice, but do Spurs have another left sided center half?
Toby Alderweireld – 6.5
Toby Alderweireld was the unlucky Spur who had the ball deflect off of him and into the goal. Alderweireld was slightly better than Dier from a passing department but only slightly. Had his hands full with Vardy all day – as do most – but outside of the own goal held his own. Just seemed more unsure than he normally is throughout the match.
Serge Aurier – 5
After such a grueling matchup midweek and not getting the day off Serge Aurier was a mental error waiting to happen. Out of position and apparently out of his mind in committing the foul that led to the penalty, there was no reason to have done it. The foul was on a center back near the edge of the penalty box facing away from goal. Sent a lot of crosses into the box (6) but only two were accurate. Both led the team.
