In a match that went very much according to plan overall, Liverpool capitalized on the opportunities and Tottenham did not as Spurs fell, so how did everyone play.

Tottenham Hotspur had a clear game plan which was executed to near perfection. Liverpool are unbeaten in 66 straight matches at home and Tottenham were just the wrong side of a few bounces of the ball from breaking the streak. So, who played well for Spurs and who did not?

Defensive Ratings

The Tottenham defense played well overall as they limited the clear-cut chances for Liverpool. Ultimately, after a lot of bending the defense did break and conceded on a 90th minute corner to fall to defeat. Some strong individual efforts are easy to forget in such a loss as just a single lapse in focus cost the team.

Hugo Lloris – 8

Hugo Lloris was undoubtedly the best Tottenham performer on the evening, despite conceding two goals. Lloris had nine saves a couple of which were really good. Lloris got down and did well to parry a Firmino effort wide of goal. However, many of the shots were right at him. Must feel hard done to give up and 90th minute winner after conceding a fluky goal off a deflection.

Ben Davies – 6

Ben Davies was in position all day and battled hard to help keep the opportunities for Mohamed Salad and Trent Alexander-Arnold limited. While Davies defending was sound, always being in position and ready to do whatever is needed, his offense left a lot to be desired. With the ball at his feet Davies was plum awful. Davies completed only 7 passes for a team worst 35% which helped contribute to Tottenham’s inability to maintain possession.

Eri Dier – 7

Eric Dier fought well in the box until he was picked out of the play on the game winning goal. Dier defended hard and was rarely caught out by a relentless Liverpool attack. Where Dier was disappointing on the day was with his passing. Eric completed only 14 passes on the day and often tried too hard to force the issue deep down field as the long balls have been off from Eric.

Toby Alderweireld – 7

Toby Alderweireld had a mirror performance to Dier’s as Toby defended well and very smartly but did little to contribute to Spurs possession. Completing only 13 passes on the day Toby very much played a safety-first brand of football and when it doubt he kicked it out. Almost got one diagonal off, but it was blocked.

Serge Aurier – 7.5

Serge Aurier had a difficult task with Saido Mane his main foil the entire match. Aurier clawed, fought, and held the upper hand for much of the match. The best passing defender of Spurs with 15 completions at 65% on the night. Serge did seem to wear down late in the match with Mane looking the stronger of the two as the game went on and it was Mane who earned the corner that turned into the winner.
