In Tottenham versus Manchester City Coaching Rivalry Renewed
By Aaron Coe
The Tottenham coach has faced a lot of men in his career, but Pep Guardiola is one of only two men who have faced Mourinho 10 or more times and has a winning record.
Whether we call him the “Special One”, the “Experienced One”, or simply Coach Mourinho; one thing Tottenham Hotspur coach Jose Mourinho specializes in is winning. Across Jose Mourinho’s career he has an incredible 613 wins from 954 matches, for a 64% career win percentage. However, that win percentage is not quite the same against Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola, where Mourinho’s combined win and draw percentage is below his career win percentage at just 52%.
Mourinho and Winning
64% is an incredible winning percentage unheard of in almost any sport, let alone professional football, where dropping points is the norm. While Mourinho’s record against two coaches in particular Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp is not great, against pretty much everyone else Mourinho dominates. There are 16 coaches Mourinho has faced at least 10 times in his career, with only Guardiola and Klopp having a winning record against him.
Jose Mourinho only lost twice to Sir Alex Ferguson in 16 career matches. Mourinho has been so dominate overall he has never lost to five of the sixteen coaches he has faced at least 10 time, never lost. David Moyes, Steve Bruce, Sam Allardyce, Jesualdo Ferreira and Sean Dyche have faced Mourinho a combined 59 times and never beaten a Mourinho team. Further Mourinho’s sides have won 40 of those 59 matches, a 68%-win rate.
However, that win rate and tremendous success is not the same against Klopp and Guardiola, especially Pep given there is no manager Jose Mourinho has faced more in his career than the Spaniard. According to transfermrkt.com Guardiola is the only coach to have double digits victories against Mourinho with 11, Rafa Benitez is next closest with six wins in his 19 attempts to beat Mourinho.
