Other Top Performers for Tottenham

It was difficult to start separating players and performances after the top two as so many Spurs are playing well to start the season. However, to us here at HotspurHQ, three players have been doing their part at a level just a bit higher than the rest, so who are three, four and five.

Pierre-Emile Højbjerg #3 on Form

Pierre-Emile Højbjerg has been everything that was advertised when he came from Southampton to Tottenham early in the transfer window for a reasonable fee. The Dane is strong in the tackle, stout in defense, and does an excellent job protecting the back line in open play. What many did not realize, was just how good an on the ball footballer Hojbjerg is.

Højbjerg’s range of passing whether the short possession stuff in the back or the thread the needle through ball have been far better than advertised. Of course, at Southampton so much was on Pierre’s shoulders and he was under much greater pressure every time he touched the ball. At Spurs, he is one of many cogs in the machine and that extra bit of time and space on the ball is everything as Hojbjerg has been a midfield revelation, looking every bit the prime Nemanja Matic type player Jose Mourinho was looking for. There is no doubt when available PEH is one of the first names written down on the team sheet.

Lucas Moura #4 on Form

This one may be a bit controversial as Lucas Moura can really divide opinion among the Tottenham faithful. We will never forget Amsterdam, but we also struggle to get over the days when Moura just seems to be aimlessly running around the field. With Jose Mourinho in charge, those days of aimless running are over for Lucas Moura, he is now a man with purpose.

Moura is clearly a Mourinho favorite and is the only Tottenham player to appear in all 10 matches thus far this season. He is also only one of four Spurs – along with Son, Kane, and Serge Aurier – who have both a goal and an assist on the season. Moura has three goals, which is third on the team behind Son and Kane and has one assist.

Again, to extrapolate those numbers across a 48-game season – Spurs may play well over 50 this year – and you end up with 14 goals and about 5 assists. Those numbers would be new club highs for Moura who scored 10 goals in 18-19 and had 4 assists last season after none the year before. To say Mourinho has helped further Lucas’ game and career is an understatement and Tottenham are the beneficiaries.

Tanguy Ndombele #5 on Form

Tanguy Ndombele got off to a great start with his Tottenham career scoring against Newcastle to help Spurs win. However, as the season progressed, whether it was injury, adjustment, or something else entirely, Tanguy Ndombele just never got back to that level he displayed in his first match or two with the club.

In watching All or Nothing, you could see Ndombele was not someone Spurs were going to give up on and both Mourinho and Daniel Levy worked to help Ndombele transition to life in London. As this season has started that work seems to be paying on with the performances on the pitch.

Ndombele has not assisted any goals yet, but has managed to score twice, but more importantly, the French international is controlling games with his ball control. It was not that Harry Winks was that bad against West Ham when he came on, it really was that Ndombele was that good in dominating the midfield.

The quick feet and immaculate touch of Tanguy means that defenders cannot get but so close or else they end up a meme for the internet. Just as having other quality players around him has lifted Højbjerg’s game, simply being an outstanding footballer has lifts Tanguy’s.

An even brighter sign for Spurs fans with the Frenchman has been the work rate of Ndombele, which has been excellent. Tanguy has done a good job tracking back and working to press. While he will never be confused with Moussa Sissoko in the athletic department or Højbjerg with his defense, Ndombele can do enough of each to compliment his outstanding skills. It is those skills and that effort that have Ndombele fifth in our Top Five Tottenham Hotspur players on form.

What do you think, who is your top five?
